Intralink client Ubiquisys lands order with NEC for Softbank's "world first" IMS-based Femtocell system PDF 인쇄 E-mail
Sep 24, 2008 - Swindon, England - Ubiquisys Ltd, the leading developer of 3G femtocells, today announced that it has received an order from its partner NEC for SOFTBANK MOBILE CORP. (based in Minato-ku Tokyo; President: Masayoshi Son) for IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem)-based Femtocells. The Ubiquisys ZoneGate femtocell will be supplied as part of the overall NEC Femtocell System that also includes an IMS Core and Femto Gateways. This represents the world's first commercial deployment of 3G IMS-based femtocells. SOFTBANK MOBILE intends to offer services to consumers from January 2009.

"Japan is a world leader in mobile innovation so it should come as no surprise that SOFTBANK MOBILE is the first operator to deploy commercial 3G IMS-based femtocells. It's about more than providing people with the best mobile service at home though - it's about the new possibilities opened up by a full-speed, dependable mobile broadband experience," said Chris Gilbert, CEO Ubiquisys. "This announcement is likely to have ramifications around the world, heralding the true dawn of the femtocell age. We are delighted to be working closely with our partner NEC to make this a reality."

For operators with mature IMS or Next Generation Networks (NGN), deploying the ZoneGate femtocell is a great way of leveraging this investment. The IMS client is incorporated within the femtocell, providing a flat architecture with cost-effective scalability. By acting as an IMS proxy, the femtocell also allows the operator to offer IMS services to legacy 3G handsets for the first time.

For operators with strategic plans to move to NGN, ZoneGate offers the flexibility of rolling-out femtocells today on deployed technologies such as RAN Gateway, then later adding the IMS client to the femtocell population.

About Ubiquisys:

Ubiquisys was formed in 2004 to bring its ground-breaking ZoneGate femtocell technology to market. ZoneGate femtocells are manufactured with Sony UK Tech and are available as standalone units or as part of a residential gateway device such as Netgear's DVG834GH. The system supports multiple interfaces to the operator's core network, and is remotely managed and updated using standard TR-069 management systems such as Motive's Home Device Manager. Ubiquisys' sole focus is femtocells, and in 2007 it created the Femto Forum to promote standards and partnerships in this fast-emerging industry. In May 2008 ABI Research named Ubiquisys as the world's leading femtocell vendor in their Femtocell Vendor Matrix. The company is funded by Accel Partners, Advent Venture Partners, Atlas Venture, Google and T-Mobile Venture Fund.
